Die individuelle Gestaltung von Produkten und Produktionsprozessen wirkt sich immer stärker auf die Logistik aus. „Wir sind auf dem Weg in eine logistische Gesellschaft“, stellt Prof. Michael ten Hompel fest, Leiter des Fraunhofer-Instituts für Materialfluss und Logistik (IML) in Dortmund. Er eröffnete am Dienstag die 27. Dortmunder Gespräche, eine Veranstaltung der Bundesvereinigung Logistik in Kooperation mit dem Fraunhofer IML.

Die deutsche Logistik zeigt sich im dritten Quartal 2009 verhalten optimistisch. Der Logistik-Indikator legt spürbar zu, und die Unternehmen melden einen verstärkten Mitteleinsatz für Investitionen in Innovationen. Gleichwohl liegt der absolute Indexstand mit einem Wert von 82,6 Punkten immer noch deutlich unter der 100-Punkte-Marke und damit weiterhin im kontraktiven Bereich. Getragen wird diese Entwicklung maßgeblich von deutlich aufgehellten Erwartungen für die Entwicklung in den nächsten zwölf Monaten. Während sich die Lageeinschätzung nur um 6 Punkte verbesserte, legten die Erwartungen um fast 23 Punkte zu. Lagebeurteilung (Indexstand: 56 Punkte) und Zukunftserwartungen (109 Punkte) zeichnen somit ein sehr gespaltenes Bild. Noch nie war die Spanne zwischen den beiden Indikatorkomponenten größer als im laufenden Quartal.

The transport sector's share of European gross national product is around 7%, making it a significant economic and growth factor. In Germany - a major transit country - logistics is the third largest sector after the wholesale and retail trade and the automotive industry. Germany's share of the European logistics market is around 28%, which makes it a major player in the economic development of Europe. Current forecasts predict that trasport growth, and thus the importance of the transport industry as an employment factor, will continue to increase over the years ahead.

The logistics systems in western Europe are characterized more by politicalchange associated with EU enlargement than by geographic features. As a result of uniform regulations, transport, storage, packaging and administrative jobs are becoming considerably more efficient. The transport networks are very well developed - but average shipping distances have grown principally in the wake of the European Union’s enlargement. Logistics in western Europe is being increasingly affected by outsourcing activities because companies no longer consider logistics to be a core business.

The logistics sector in Germany generated revenues of EUR 190 bn in 2007. Nominal revenues have risen by an average of around 4.5% per year since 2001. This makes logistics one of the faster growing sectors in Germany. The German logistics market is the biggest in the EU with a share in turnover of over 20%.
